Problems with gum disease and tooth decay can sometimes damage the roots of your teeth, cause a loss of bone material in the jaw where your teeth are anchored, or cause the outright loss of multiple teeth. In reality, your teeth and gums actually have a more function in your mouth than simply chewing food. They also provide structure for your facial muscles and greatly affect the clarity of your speech.
If you have lost multiple teeth or you have several teeth with compromised roots your dentist might recommend you be fitted for a partial or a custom pair of dentures. This can help restore the majority of your mouth’s function.
Essentially dentures are a removable set teeth fixed into a material that approximates your gums. Some people might only need dentures in their lower jaw, while others might need both upper and lower dentures.
Your periodontist will probably want to take a series of X-rays to get a clear assessment of your jaw structure. Even if there some healthy teeth in your mouth they may need to be extracted before you can be fitted for dentures.
Once the extraction procedure is completed the gums will be sutured closed. They will then fit your for a pair of temporary dentures. This will restore some functional chewing ability while your gums are healing and the custom dentures are being made.
Many denture wearers prefer to use denture adhesive to give them a secure hold while chewing sticky foods.
