The Three Consequences of Not Treating a Dental Cavity

Posted .

Tooth decay is not something you mess with, which is why it’s strongly recommended to see your dentist, Dr. Jorge Bastidas, right away and get the problem treated. If you get it treated as soon as possible, then you might only need a dental filling. If you delay treatment, you might need more extensive treatment, like:

-Dental crown placement: If the cavity is not treated and it destroys a majority of the tooth’s structure, then it will be difficult to correct with a dental filling. In this situation, only a dental crown can fix the issue.

-Root canal therapy: If the tooth decay is not treated and it reaches the pulp chamber, which is where the nerve and blood vessels are located, then the pulp will be irritated and infected. This can also lead to an abscess, which is extremely painful. At this point, only a root canal can take care of the issue.

-Tooth extraction: If the tooth decay is left untreated and a dental crown and root canal is not helpful, then the tooth will need to be extracted. This is the worst case scenario and it should be avoided at all costs.

It’s best to receive treatment right away so you can eliminate the tooth decay in your smile and return to a normal and healthy life.
