How often do you have to deal with bad breath? This embarrassing condition is typically caused by bacteria or by food particles in your mouth. While removing bacteria may be your best answer, there are a few things other options you can consider to attain immediate relief.
While you may think of using a breath mint first, please note that this may not be your best option. Most breath mints are high in sugar and, although sugar doesn’t directly hurt your teeth or your gums, it does feed the bacteria that leads to bad breath. Instead of breath mints, you may want to consider chewing sugar-free gum.
While gum itself can’t remove bad bacteria, the strong minty flavors of breath mints and gum can mask bad breath for awhile. You can also chew on crisp fruits and vegetables which will promote the flow of saliva which can remove food particles from your mouth.
Eating dairy products such as cheese and unsweetened yogurt can help by neutralizing the acids that are responsible for bad breath. Similarly, simply drinking water can wash away acid while carrying away food particles.
The best thing you can do to prevent bad breath is to practice good oral hygiene. Brush at least twice each day, floss at least once daily, and keeping scheduled dental cleanings to remove hardened plaque and tartar from your teeth and gum line–will go a long way to keep your breath healthy.
