Dentures are removable appliances that replace missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. Replacing missing teeth is beneficial to both your appearance and your health. Dentures will restore your ability to eat and speak properly, and they can help maintain the shape of your face. If you have lost most or all of your teeth, Dr. Jorge Bastidas may recommend dentures in Paterson, New Jersey. There are two types of dentures: complete and partial.
Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing. Complete dentures can be conventional or immediate. Conventional dentures are made after your remaining teeth have been removed and the gums and tissues have begun to heal. Conventional dentures are placed eight to twelve weeks after the teeth have been removed. Immediate dentures are made in advance and can be placed as soon as the teeth are removed. The wearer does not have to go without teeth during the healing process; however, the gums and bones shrink during healing, so immediate dentures need more adjustments in the future to fit properly.
Partial dentures are used when one or more of your teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. A partial denture can be either removable or fixed. Removable dentures consist of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored base. A metal framework sometimes serves to hold the denture in place in your smile. A fixed denture, sometimes called a bridge, replaces teeth by placing crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap and attaching replacement teeth between them. The bridge is cemented in place by our dentist.
